We provide a safe space and a hot meal for men who cannot access statutory benefits or homeless services due to their immigration status. They are mainly refused asylum seekers who cannot work, study or receive public funds.
Our guests are completely destitute, without our help they’d have to sleep rough, exposed to the elements and vulnerable to illness, exploitation and violence.
With no recourse to public funds, most at the night shelter are without any financial support whatsoever. This means they can’t use public transport, get a haircut, buy clothes or a cup of coffee, or acquire anything at all that needs cash. They are completely reliant on charity to provide sustenance, shelter and safety.
It’s difficult to imagine what it’s like to live without any money at all, unable to buy even basic things such as soap or razors. It’s difficult to imagine that some men have lived in this way for several years.
It’s not difficult, however, to understand the destructive effect this situation has on the self-esteem and mental health of our guests.
We want to raise enough money to give 22 men staying at the night shelter £10 a week. It’s not a huge sum of money but it makes all the difference for men who have absolutely nothing and are completely dependent on charity for everything.
As a small, independent charity that receives no government backing we’re asking our supporters to help us. Please make a donation, however big or small, to the Glasgow Night Shelter’s hardship fund for destitute asylum seekers.
Alternatively donations can be made by transferring money to the Glasgow Night Shelter for Destitute Asylum Seekers account at any Lloyds TSB branch, account number: 75281960 and sort code: 87-37-17.
