Night Shelter Winter Appeal 2016
The weather in Glasgow is freezing cold just now. We’ve already had snow this year…
The night shelter is the safety net, the life line, the last line of support stopping people from having to sleep on the street. We don’t get any public funding – our funding comes entirely from donations from our supporters and from grants from other charities that back our work.
As usual at this time of year Glasgow Night Shelter is very busy with more men staying at the shelter than ever before. With the long, cold, dark, wet nights, this time of year is always difficult for the men staying at the shelter.
Every night of the year our volunteers provide somewhere warm and welcoming for them to stay overnight and a hot evening meal – even on Christmas and Boxing Day and on Hogmanay.
This year will be not be any different. Quite often during the winter holidays we face gaps in our rota of volunteers as many of them leave Glasgow to spend time with friends or family.
Please donate your time: We are looking for volunteers to help cover the gaps in our weekly rota so our regular volunteers can get a break over the holiday period.
We also need volunteers to help at our Christmas and Boxing and New Year’s Day drop-ins so that the guys staying a the shelter have somewhere to spend the day when everything else is closed to them. This year the drop-ins will be held at the lovely Kinning Park Complex. There will be a traditional Xmas Dinner (As well as vegetarian and halal options) along with a film show, games and lots of presents!
The drop-ins will run from 10am to 6pm on the 25th, 26th December and 1st January with two 4 hour long shifts for volunteers to cover either a morning or afternoon. Email email@example.com for more information.
Open evening for winter volunteers: If you are interested in helping at the shelter over the holiday period or want to help on Christmas, Boxing or New Year’s Day we are holding a special Open Evening for Winter volunteers on Thursday 1st December at 8pm at the night shelter. Email us for more details.
Financial donations for the night shelter can be made by donating money to the “Glasgow Destitute Asylum Seeker Night Drop In” account at any Lloyds TSB branch, account No: 75140563 and sort Code: 87-37-51.
Please make sure to indicate whether you wish your money to go to the hardship fund or to the new women’s shelter or to the general night shelter running costs.
Please donate clothing: At this time of year we normally put out an appeal for donations of new thermal underwear, socks, t-shirts, and boxer shorts, as well as any spare clean warm coats, hats, scarves and gloves you may have.
This year is not any different!
Next time you are in town or near a supermarket please spend a few pounds buying new underwear or gloves or a woolly hat for the guys staying in the shelter.
You can drop your clothing donations off at a number of locations around Glasgow during the day:
Maslows Charity Shop, 70 Shaw Street GOVAN
The MILK Cafe, Victoria Road, GOVANHILL
Social Bites Cafe, 130 St Vincent Street CITY CENTRE
Alternatively please phone the night shelter co-ordinator on 07929852264 or email firstname.lastname@example.org and we can give you details of how to get to the night shelter when we are open in the evening.
